Thousands of birds randomly falling out of the sky, shallow earthquakes, floods, plenty fish washing up dead, global warming, planet Nibiru closing in on the earth and the Mayan Prophecies coming true or maybe just the earth doing its thing? Either way, I don’t have an answer and I really couldn’t care less because there is nothing at all I can do about it bar global warming! Here is a pretty interesting website that lists a lot of the dead fish and bird incidents if you are interested…http://tinfoilpalace.eamped.com/2011/01/06/collation-of-dead-birds-and-fish/
But that’s not this weeks email no no no! this weeks email is far more interesting and the cause of much head and heartache for many of this worlds inhabitants. Greetings to you all my dear friends or people who just receive this email and read it because ☺
So Jan almost done, Feb well on its way and look at all you romantics getting all hearty eyed. February the month of love…woop woop. Now before I go on please, please, please, don’t go psycho analyzing me or anything, I have been rejected by puhleeeenty, I haven’t been deeply hurt by a woman, I am not jaded etc etc…promise…
So anyway this year…like last year and a little the year before, I have decided that I will try and get a girlfriend. Yes its out there, I am in the market…well sort of ;) Now many conversations have been had recently around this topic and the methodical approach to this, what about love, you cant control when and who you fall in love with, I vomited in my mouth…slightly.
LOVE?!
I’ve had many a fight with a good mate of mine, Mbumbu, he is properly all heart. If I had to be honest, because that’s what I am…haa.. he has had a very big hand in both of my relationships. Yes that’s right just 2 serious relationships 5 mths and a couple short of 2 years. In both instances I was super keen but also reluctant and its my issue. I confess I am pretty f**ked when it comes to that, and trust you me the older I get the worse it gets, because insane selfishness and routine and familiarity sets in.
Ok so now I have made a conscious decision to give relationships a go. But, Yaw that’s so durr I hear, love blah blah and I’m like love..shmove! Love is a man created emotion, just like anger and elation, those emotions pass and what is left? Wouldn’t you rather have a great foundation upon which to base a relationship bar this fairytale called love? How about compatibility, similar values, similar aspirations, ability to look after you and the family, friendship, because guys and girls lets not fool ourselves, this love thing dies and what’s left is 2 people working together to make this insanely difficult thing called a relationship work.
I think I’d even go as far as say love in any format is overrated emotion and maybe even non existent, but that’s just me, mr practical. I have never been able to get a satisfactory definition for love, so I came up with my own. Yes I have “loved” one lass in my life but my definition of love was I disliked flying but I flew regularly to go and see her, and I was helluva fond of her and I spoke to her frequently, cos she was interesting. Is that love? Or is it rather that we worked well together? I have a good few friends that I actually enjoy shooting the breeze with. We challenge each other, either on the squash courts, tennis courts, touch rugby field, debate and discourse; I thoroughly enjoy my time with them. When we don’t see each other for ages and hook up again its like the old days, nothing has changed. Is that love? I don’t know. They definitely have a huge role to play in my life and they help me in my growth and development and hopefully I in theirs but is it love errr?
Why is it that the practice of arranged marriages work a lot of the time? I don’t know the stats, but I am inclined to think that more succeed than fail, because you have 2 individuals who mentally prepare themselves for a union based on facts rather than emotion…
Family, styling family, I’d do what I can for them when I can or even when I cant. Is that because its obligation, is that because that is what I am supposed to do, is that because its what I want to do or is it this thing we call love?
I am not too convinced. As a human being in many situations we are in control of how we feel. Love, is just another emotion we can control. We build this person or people up to be what we want to see them as and make the emotion snowball into something that becomes uncontrollable, its like inception, an idea is planted and then we evolve it.
Those that really know me, will know that I am an emotional kind of person, so I am not a robot ☺ but there are some fantastical concepts that I deeply question and this notion of love is definitely right up there. People use it as an excuse to motivate irrational and silly behaviour or acts, people hold it so highly that when this created emotion dissolves there is nothing left and guess what happens, how they relate to this person or thing that was the object of their love and affection, suffers perhaps even ends!
There are times that I hoped that I was like all these hearty eyed people floating around, falling so deeply for someone that I am totally vulnerable and in the event that the love dies, I am totally ineffective and non functioning, I drink myself into a stupor eat till I am 150kgs, I contemplate killing myself because I cant live without them….you get the picture?
But ey to each their own ;) So as I said I’m looking see ;)

Oh Africa...
Oh Africa…
But is it just here? On the greater continent, other than Iraqis and Afghans blowing each other up daily, there are sporadic reports of the Basque uprising in Spain, Burmese people being squashed, Russia smashing Georgia, civil unrest in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, drug wars in Mexico and Columbia, to name but a few…yes the world and its countries have their issues aplenty, but this my continent is special, very special.
Hey peops, trust week 3 of the year is still providing the promise of a great and exciting year that day 1 brought with it. Can you believe it 20th of Jan already?! It reminds me of something I heard yesterday…or was it this morning “Life is like toilet paper, the closer you get to the end the faster it goes ☺
So back to my observation about this continent of ours… I seem to be constantly having this conversation with my pops or some mates about will this continent ever over come? Over come what you might ask? Every week there is something new. You lose an election which international observers that you allowed in have adjudged to have been free and fair, yet you refuse to leave office? Why cant you be like those forlorn looking people on survivor that when the presenter says ‘the tribe has spoken’ just packs their bags and leaves huh, why. Why must you insist on staying on like its your family business against which someone is attempting a hostile take over. Its not your bloody playground damnit! And its not just Ivory Coast, we have Zim who has had the same president for over 30 years, DRC where a president dies and his son takes over because that’s how it should be, yes same thing in Cuba with Fidel and his brother, Russia, Putin and his puppet, but we aren’t talking about those countries. I am talking about my beloved continent. So rich in so many things but very poor in this thing called common sense, because I guess its not so common.
Bless the Tunisians for showing us the way man, there was a dictator in power and the people stood up and sang…”we’re not gonna take it, no we not gonna take it, we not gonna take it…anymore!” bravo to them and I think even bigger kudos to the president who instead of ordering the military or the army to just kill the masses, decided to flee to Saudi.
But I guess leaders staying in power indefinitely and genocide etc is only but part of our problems, because the latter for example has its roots in religion and ethnicity. A problem that I grapple with a lot is ok so I am president X and everyday I drive to work in my bullet proof Mercedes benz on a pothole filled road that the drivers of the Dakar Rally would be more than at home on. I see gutters that are open on the side of the roads, I see little kids sitting there begging for pitons instead of being in class working. I see the road littered people who have no jobs. I get to the office and every 3 hours the electricity fails for about 2 hours and the water stops running frequently. I go to bed at night and I think woow what a good job I am doing….and you know what. I think a good lot of them do believe that they are doing a good job. I can hear some of them speaking now; “you know eh, when I was growing up, I would be up at 4.30am have to walk 5km to fetch water to wash before school, then I would walk 15km to school. You people eh, you are now living in heaven oh. Press a button oh and there is light, no candles…e-l-e-c-t-r-c-i-t-y…marvelous…turn this thing and water gushing out…so spoilt you out…this thing its ok!!!
NO its not Ok! Yes we are a little better in some ways than in 1957 but in a lot of ways we are no better off. You raise 100mil to build a road, 5 years later road isn’t finished 100mil is gone without a trace, its not ok. 2011 and fertile land aplenty yet people go hungry and its ok?! Nah man
Why is this? I am a proponent of remember the past but don’t let it hold you back, but I fear the Colonial rule that governed moulded the minds of Africa’s current leaders and to the detriment of this continent. The general mindset seems to be more of self and less of the greater population. Because I have lived a life of want or known a life of want, now that I am in power let me loot, but I guess in some cases this isn’t true because a lot of the leaders have had good schooling. But I do honestly believe that a lot of the continents current leaders carry the heavy burden of the past which manifests itself into pride and stubbornness and those that suffer are the self same civilians who elected this person into power because he promised better water, sanitation, jobs, you know the basics that would guarantee a better life for all…
I don’t know maybe I am clutching at straws, and looking for an explanation for this horror story that is Africa. I am in no way a politician, but let me take a country like Ghana for example. One of the largest producers of gold in the world, second largest producer of cocoa in the world, just found oil, huge timber producer, enormous amounts of fertile land, lovely coast line. Yes its been touted by the World Bank a few days ago as the fastest growing country in Sub Sahara Africa, but man but…we have a massively long way to go still. Something as simple as town planning is a mess. Simple things like street addresses is a mission. Identity numbers of the inhabitants of the country is a mission. There is a massive lake called the Volta lake which I am sure can harness enough hydro electric power to supply CONTINUOUS electricity to the whole of Ghana. There is enough rainfall to ensure that people have constant water supply. And how hard will it be to set up a water purification plant? But what are we doing?
People build massive houses in upper class neighborhoods, but the government is unable to provide a decent road network system to service these houses.
Will we ever overcome I ask? There are enough smart people on this continent to ensure that we do overcome, and I applaud institutions like the African Leadership Academy who from a young age identify youngsters with good leadership qualities and harness this, because that can only bode well for the continent, but in the short term, I think what we need are young less jaded people who have already made money to run our countries. The saddest thing though is such people I guess are smart enough to stay out of politics.

twenty one one...so it begins
Twenty one one! So it begins another year for target setting if you that way inclined or just for living if that’s your thing too. I cant sit here and tell you one way is more right than the other.
Ow mates, this is going to be one of those philosophical types, cos man that’s been my mood for the last few weeks…and it’s the beginning of a new decade so I am allowed to not so?
Greetings dear friends and people who may not like me that much but still read this ;) it is my hope that inspite of whatever ups and downs we may have faced in 2010, by the fact that we are wherever we are and reading this means that we had the strength from wherever to persevere and see it through! May the year ahead be absolutely everything you make it. I know I am stating the obvious here and we are all old enough to know this, but no matter how hard we try to make sure we prevent it, sh it will definitely happen, our reaction to it determines how our hour, day, week, month or year turns out.
Over the December period and most of last year I did a lot of reflection and it made me smile. I actually love my life. I am not shoving anything in anyones face or anything like that. I just took a step back and thought about it…many an outsider would look at me and think shoo what a looser! Or what a fatty, or shoo bra is losing his hair, shoo bra is 35 and no girlfriend, qualified accountant and no job, whats wrong with him…or…or… but inspite of that I wake up every day and thank my maker for nothing else other than the fact that its my life and I guess I have the ability to live it how I am allowed to in a manner that pleases me. Not too many people in this world have that ability…little things, roof, food, friends, legs, hands, eyes, ears, mind (even though the last few are struggling)
How often have we heard this question being asked: “What’s the meaning of life?” I don’t know anyone who has been given a satisfactory answer or anyone who can claim to have the answer to that. And maybe that’s just that. There is no universal answer to the meaning of life question. Perhaps we are all here to define a meaning for our own lives as guided by our maker if that’s your thing, which I believe it should be irrespective of who you believe your maker is. The older I get or the more time I have to reflect, I realize that I am happiest with people, listening, learning, watching rugby and doing my little bit here and there where I can and communicating to get more people aware of what is going on out there, not that I know everything but each one teach one I guess….So that’s my meaning in life engaging and if possible shoot making someone laugh even if its at me and earning money somewhere so it can enable me…not define me ;)
Another thing that I am realizing more and more is that we need God in our lives. But I say that with qualification. I am not asking for us to turn into religious freaks because I believe the world has enough of them, people who are all too ready to tell another they are no good because they don’t believe in the same things that they do. Believing in God…any god if its done correctly can never be a wrong thing. Most of us, if not all of us, were raised with some sort of religious/spiritual grounding and we all turned out ok, we learnt the difference between wrong and right, good and bad and most importantly how to relate and treat others. The best teaching I ever learnt and even though I may falter at times, was the teaching of: “do unto others as you would like them to do unto you”. This I learnt when I was a wee lad. If you read and understand that and hold it dear, how many people would be murdered, cheated on, insulted in this world? I am pretty far from God as I sit here. I was raised a Christian, but I struggle with random things and maybe its because I don’t know or only know half the story, things like Adam and Eve (on day 6) from what I remember had 3 kids first Cain and Abel and then Seth…all boys. Cain killed Abel. Cain had a wife and they had a kid Enoch…now where this other wife person come from I ask because all this is before there is any mention of any sons and daughters…anyway as I was saying I don’t have all the answers, and yes many of the worlds evils have been in the name of religion and MAN’s interpretation, we take the holocaust, apartheid, suicide bombings, Waco massacres (David Koresh) to name but a few…many from way back when. But the essence of God as we are taught when we are younger, is about less self and more the world and others and that’s what is really needed in this world. We are all so tending more to self and less the world and others…its fast forward to self destruction! I look at this continent for starters, wait even this country, not just the people in power, but all of us. ITS ALL ABOUT MEEE MEE MEE, taking rotten chickens, and treating them and repackaging them to be resold, who cares who gets sick as long as I don’t have a loss and thus I will have my fat bonus…find a greater being to believe in and follow their teachings, most of them are very similar in any case!
Last thing is start with ME. We are so quick to point out others issues and flaws thinking we are perfect, newsflash we are all soo flawed, I am not saying dwell on it and let it consume, but just bear it in mind. I for one am so F#@ked in a good many ways!! But I know this man, everyday is a challenge to rectify, will I get it right, ehh not so much but acknowledging helps me accept flaws in others…
I don’t know what it is, but I am so positive about the year that it 20 1 1, and come the 31st Dec 2011, and I realize that that optimism/positivity is misplaced, well then if I lived to that day, then there is always 2012 to make right the wrongs of 2011. I know putting it out there has clearly jinxed it, but what will be will be isn’t it?!
SincerelyWish you all the best man, because there is absolutely nothing stopping you from achieving what you want to achieve, or at least giving it your best shot, because at the end of the day if you didn’t get it, well then it wasn’t meant to be, it will be a bummer, but another better thing might just be there.
Ok enough ☺ happy Tuesday people, sorry about al the birthdays I missed end of last year, hope you all had absolute rippers. I am going to start off fresh with this years birthdays:
